NEW HOPE ACADEMY
New Hope Academy began in 1994 as a recreation center for the war weary youth of the Gardenersville and Paynesville communities in Liberia. It was located near the Double Bridge and later relocated opposite the LPRC Junction and Shoes Factory, where the Proprietor taught young boys and girls martial arts, leadership skills and moral principles. The number of interested young men and women grew and the need for a school became apparent. Responding to this community need for a school, the Proprietor opened an elementary school in March 1995 and named it, “Second Generation Re-creation Institute.”
This institution attracted many students between 1995 and 2000, but the need for a larger school in the area continued to grow. Parents in the community appealed to the Proprietor, Mr. Augustine S. Arkoi, to expand the school to include all grade levels through high school. In response to such requests of parents and other community citizens, Mr. Arkoi purchased three acres (12 lots) of land opposite the Monrovia Vocational Training Center. The school derived its name, “New Hope Academy,” from the fact that it provides an opportunity for many boys and girls to go to school after the war at an affordable cost, giving them New Hope. The area where the school is located is called “Peace Island,” a name derived from the message for a Culture of Peace preached by the Proprietor in the community. |
